This weekend Yo-Yo Ma is performing at my school, and for some reason I got on a short list of about 10 faculty that were invited to meet and mingle with him after the performance at the house of the woman who organizes the concert series.  I can't think of one thing I would say if I was talking to him.  If anyone has any bright ideas for conversation with him, let me know.

Bitshepherd was at home, sick, yesterday and also today.  He was bored and he watched a couple episodes of the BBC's Pride and Prejudice.  And he enjoyed it!  Haha, I love it.  Capital.

I've noticed that when Bit gets really sick and congested (from a cold or flu virus), he starts thinking hard about how to reduce congestion from his dust allergies in the house.  Then he orders me to execute the solution (sick people's orders are more authoritative).  The last time he got sick he made me vacuum our bedroom.  This time he told me to figure out how to change the air filter for the furnace.  Reluctantly I trudged down to the basement and found instructions on the new air filter box.  I turned off the furnace blower and pulled out the air filter.  Lo, to my surprise, there was a mummified mouse corpse stuck in the filter housing on top of the old filter.  Naturally, I screamed.   I went upstairs to get gloves and bitterly updated Bitshepherd on the situation.  Sick people not only have special dispensation to issue orders, but they are also exempt from the normal tasks of every day life (such as rodent removal).  I went back down and tried to build up my courage and devise a strategy for prying out the mouse without a feared leak/explosion of smelly guts.  A while later, Bit took pity on me and pried the mouse out of the housing with a wire and went back upstairs without a word.  He had a temperature of over 103F.   Finally I grabbed the freed mouse and tossed it into the garbage can.  Victory!

Usually I just throw mailed-in credit card offers right into the shredder but this time I opened one up and I noticed an interesting statement at the bottom of the letter-- "You can choose to stop receiving 'prescreened' offers of credit from this and other companies by calling toll free 1-888-5-OPT-OUT."

Surprised, I checked the other credit card offer that had also come in that day's mail.  Although it was from a different company, it too said I could stop receiving these offers of credit.  Or as I think of it, these offers to shackle myself into credit card slavery like many fellow Americans.

THINK OF THE TREES THAT COULD BE SAVED!  Think of the transportation fuel and energy that could be saved!  Think of the extension on my shredder's lifespan!

To Capital One:  don't call me, I'll call you.

I went to the library yesterday morning and couldn't find anything there I wanted to read just by scanning the shelves.  I prefer fiction.  I wound up getting Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go and a book by Naguib Mahfouz.  I have no idea if I'm going to like either.

A couple weeks ago I read The Sparrow by Maria Doria Russell after reading bigmoose316's and co_op's praising of the book on their xanga pages.  It really was an excellent read, though I thought the end didn't quite live up to the build-up.  It is definitely worth a look for those who enjoy sci fi and thinking about religion.

Anyhow, if anybody has any recommendations on good novels to read, I'm all ears.  I'm fishing for book ideas.
